Greek Turkey Meatball Bowls

Jump to Recipe

There is nothing inherently boring about ground turkey; it only becomes depressing when dinner treats “lean” as permission to stop seasoning. These meatballs refuse that arrangement. Garlic, herbs, onion, seasoning, and enough moisture in the mixture keep them tender, while browning gives the outside the savory edge lean turkey desperately needs.

The bowl around them is built for contrast: warm meatballs, cool cucumber and tomato, briny feta or olives, grains or greens, and a creamy Greek-style sauce. That mix matters because turkey on its own is mild. Lemon, oregano, garlic, yogurt, and salty toppings provide the sharper flavors, while the meatballs bring substance without making the whole bowl heavy.

The other advantage is leftovers. Meatballs reheat better than a big piece of lean turkey because their smaller size lets them warm quickly without spending half an hour drying out around the edges. Build the cold components separately, add the hot meatballs when you are ready to eat, and you have a meal-prep lunch that still looks like actual food. Nobody needs to be opening a plastic container at noon and finding four beige rectangles staring back like disappointed office furniture.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 1/3 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cups cooked rice, for serving
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1 cucumber, diced
  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 clove garlic, minced (for the sauce)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (for the sauce)
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill (for the sauce)

Instructions

  1. 1In a large bowl, combine ground turkey, panko, feta, egg, garlic, oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix gently just until combined. Shape into 16 meatballs, about 1 1/2 tablespoons each.
  2. 2Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs in a single layer, working in batches if needed, and cook, turning occasionally, until browned on all sides and cooked through to an internal temperature of 165°F, 10 to 12 minutes.
  3. 3While the meatballs cook, whisk together the Greek yogurt, minced garlic, lemon juice, and dill in a small bowl to make the sauce.
  4. 4Divide the rice among bowls.
  5. 5Top each bowl with meatballs, cherry tomatoes, and cucumber.
  6. 6Drizzle with the yogurt sauce and serve.

Pro Tips

  • Use a meat thermometer to check doneness -- ground turkey meatballs should reach 165°F, and color alone isn't a reliable indicator.
  • Mix the meatball mixture gently. Overworking ground turkey makes the meatballs dense instead of tender.
  • Make the yogurt sauce while the meatballs cook so the flavors have time to meld.

Substitutions

ground turkey → ground chicken Use the same quantity and doneness temperature.
feta → crumbled goat cheese A milder, creamier option.
Greek yogurt → sour cream, thinned with a splash of milk Slightly tangier but works well in the sauce.

Storage Instructions

Refrigerate components in separate airtight containers for up to 4 days.

Freezing

Yes. Freeze cooked meatballs in an airtight container for up to 3 months; thaw overnight before reheating.
